Robert E. Claman, DDS, FICCMO

MEET DR. ROBERT E. CLAMAN

Dr. Robert E. Claman graduated from Georgetown University Dental School, Washington, D.C. in 1966 with the degree, Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS).   He began his career in dentistry in 1966 as an active duty dental officer in the United States Navy, serving eighteen months with the Fleet Marine Force in the Viet-Nam War.   He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Viet-Nam Service Medal, and the Fleet Marine Force Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars while serving his Country in that conflict. He left active service in 1967, and began his career as a general practitioner spending nine years in Redding, California.   For the last thirty three years he has practiced as a general dentist in Tahoe City, California.    For twenty years following active service, he served as a dental officer in the United States Naval Reserve Force, earning the rank of Commander.   Subsequently, he served as a dental officer in the Nevada Air National Guard, in Reno, Nevada,  for four years, earning the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.   While serving with the Nevada Air Guard he was privileged to be the Base Dental Surgeon for three years, and was awarded a Medal of Merit from the State of Nevada, and a Commendation Medal from the United States Air Force.

In the years following graduation from dental school, Dr. Claman has earned over four thousand hours of continuing general dental education credits in subjects ranging from cosmetic and restorative dentistry (fillings, crowns, fixed bridges, veneers and laser whitening), to oral surgery (extractions, biopsy of soft tissue lesions, and stabilizing oral traumas), endodontics (root canals), periodontics (soft tissue management), prosthodontics (full and partial dentures), medical emergencies in the dental office (his CPR certification is current), dental pharmacology, dental radio-surgery and laser surgery, and oral pathology (early cancer detection and screening).    Dr. Claman earned his Fellowship in the International College of Cranio-Mandibular Orthopedics (FICCMO) in 1987.   This organization, within the dental profession, emphasizes a neuromuscular approach to correcting teeth that are not “hitting” properly when a person swallows, chews, or clenches and grinds their teeth at night.   Myofacial pain dysfunction and “TMJ” can result from teeth not “hitting” properly.   Night time splints, full dentures and any extensive dental reconstruction that is made to a neuromuscular dental position, in Dr. Claman’s opinion, is the best way to solve some very painful problems in General Dentistry.   Dr. has embraced this dental philosophy of how our mouths work since 1969, when he was first made aware of it at a post graduate prosthetic dentistry course given at the University of California School of Dentistry in San Francisco, CA.

Since 1995, Dr. Claman has been a volunteer humanitarian provider  for disabled, elderly, or medically compromised individuals through the National Foundation of Dentistry for Handicapped patients.  He strongly believes in that organization's principle that states:  The inherent dignity of every individual is reflected through a happy and healthy smile.    Over the years as a private general dental practitioner, Dr. Claman has also been a member of Toastmasters, Kiwanis International, Rotary International, the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, the Sacramento District Dental Society, and the American Legion.  He is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.    He has served on the dental staff at Shasta General Hospital in Redding, California, and as the Chief of Dental Staff at Tahoe Forest General Hospital, in Truckee, California.    Dr. Claman and his beautiful wife Kathy have been married for thirty years, have three children, and two wonderful grandchildren.
